Prime Highlights-
- Wind speeds on the Tiger Valley bridge can spike to 100 kmph within minutes, making it one of the most wind-exposed stretches on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
- The windscreens are built to cut wind velocity and prevent lateral force on vehicles, keeping motorists stable even during monsoons and cyclonic weather.
Key Facts-
- MSRDC is Maharashtra’s nodal government body for building and maintaining major road infrastructure, including expressways and bridges across the state.
- The cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley is 650 metres long and rises 182 metres, making it one of the tallest and most exposed bridge sections on the expressway corridor.
Background-
MSRDC has started work on installing special windshields along the cable-stayed bridge of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s missing link project. The measure is aimed at improving safety for motorists travelling through the valley stretch.
The 650-metre bridge crosses Tiger Valley and is highly exposed to strong winds because of its elevation and 182-metre-high pylons. Rajesh Patil, Joint Managing Director of MSRDC, said wind speeds on the bridge can shoot up to 100 kmph within minutes, creating serious risks for motorists, particularly smaller vehicles crossing the gorge.
The windscreens are being installed on both sides of the bridge and are specifically designed to reduce wind velocity and eliminate sudden lateral force on passing vehicles. Officials said the barriers will ensure stability for motorists even during heavy monsoons or cyclonic weather conditions according to MSRDC.
Rajesh Patil further said the infrastructure is built for a 100-year design life, and authorities are planning for extreme weather events driven by the rising frequency of cyclonic storms from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Tenders have also been invited to provide telecom network connectivity inside the tunnels along the same corridor.
The missing link project is a critical addition to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel time between the two cities. The installation is expected to improve safety on the route for both commuters and commercial vehicles.
