Background-
The Pune Municipal Corporation has begun drawing up plans for two new flyovers on Karve Road to clear traffic jams and improve connections along one of the city’s busiest routes. The proposed structures at Karve Statue Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk are designed to facilitate smoother vehicle flow between Karvenagar and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway bypass.
Municipal officials stated the decision forms part of wider preparations for the forthcoming Pune Metro expansion. The metro extension from SNDT College to Manikbaug via Warje will run through this section, making advance infrastructure development essential to prevent complications later.
The scheme will supplement the current Karvenagar Flyover, establishing a series of three flyovers spanning Paud Phata to Warje. Authorities intend to merge the existing flyover with the elevated metro structure to guarantee seamless integration of road and rail networks.
To validate the proposal, the civic authority will conduct a comprehensive traffic analysis over seven days using automatic cameras. The assessment will examine traffic flow, congestion areas, speed fluctuations, and travel patterns on weekdays and holidays.
Officials will also review accident data from the past five years and assess environmental effects, land requirements, and financial practicality.
The plan uses a hands-on, and forward-thinking view of city development. By aligning road construction with metro development. The corporation wants to improve day-to-day commuting and stay ahead of Pune’s increasing transport demands.
