Background
The Government of Maharashtra will invest ₹1,100 crore to improve the electricity distribution network in Pune and nearby areas. The project will improve the reliability of power supply for homes, businesses and industries under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
The Maharashtra government announced measures after legislators raised concerns in the state assembly about frequent power outages. Lawmakers said that the unstable electricity supply is disrupting daily life, hurting households, small businesses and large industries in the region.
Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Mahesh Landge highlighted issues in the industrial belt of his constituency, where large IT parks and manufacturing units operate. He said repeated outages have created difficulties for industries that depend on uninterrupted electricity. Landge also warned about electricity theft in Kudalwadi, saying that only about 900 electricity meters serve nearly 5,000 commercial establishments. He said this gap causes big revenue losses and puts extra pressure on the power system.
Another legislator, Shankar Jagtap, pointed to the rising demand for electricity in Pimpri-Chinchwad, which has seen rapid urban growth in recent years. According to projections mentioned during the discussion, the population of the twin city could cross 90 lakh by 2051. Officials expect this growth to raise electricity demand and need long-term planning for infrastructure.
Responding to the concerns, Energy Minister Meghna Bordikar said the government will undertake several measures to strengthen the power network.
The government will allocate about ₹450 crore to improve infrastructure in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The funds will support upgrades to new substations, better transmission lines, and modern distribution equipment.
Officials said the work will begin after required approvals are completed. The government expects the project to improve electricity reliability, reduce outages, and support the growing energy needs of Pune’s residential communities and expanding industrial sectors.
